A full-stack platform built to capture GPS-tagged, photo-verified tree data at scale and turn it into structured reports for carbon credit programs, with QR-tagged trees giving the public instant access to tree info on their phone.
01The Challenge
Carbon credit verification demands data that can survive an audit, not just a spreadsheet someone filled in from memory. The client needed to capture tree-level data across large, often remote sites, at a volume that would eventually run into the tens of thousands, and every record had to be defensible: where the tree actually is, what condition it's actually in, tied to a timestamp and a location that can't be disputed. Manual logging couldn't scale to that, and generic form-builder tools had no concept of geo-verification or the kind of structured rollups carbon methodologies require. The system also had to hold up in the field: patchy connectivity, non-technical surveyors, and thousands of records that all needed to stay clean and traceable.
02The Solution
We built the Android field app around the phone's GPS and camera as first-class data sources, not afterthoughts. Every tree record captures its precise coordinates and a timestamped photo at the point of collection, so location and condition are verified at source rather than reconstructed later. That data syncs to a Firebase/Firestore backend, where Cloud Functions handle validation and processing as records come in, keeping the pipeline consistent even as volume scales into the tens of thousands. On the web side, a dashboard turns that raw field data into structured reports and Chart.js-powered analytics the client can use directly for carbon credit documentation, with export tooling built for that reporting workflow specifically. Each tree also carries a unique generated tag, so it stays individually traceable across surveys rather than disappearing into an aggregate count. The result is a pipeline where data integrity is built in at the point of capture, not bolted on afterward.
